Is Online Counselling for me?

Online counselling has been around for several decades but the practice grew exponentially during the Covid pandemic in response to physical distancing requirements. Since then it has become a widely accepted means of counselling with both clients and counsellors embracing it and many not returning to in-person sessions.

What is Online Counselling?

Online counselling goes by many names including online therapy, virtual counselling, e-counselling or telehealth. Instead of being in the same room as the counsellor, the client connects with the counsellor remotely – from home or elsewhere - using video-enabled software such as Zoom on a smart phone or computer.

At Spring Counselling, we offer online counselling sessions to clients anywhere in BC through Jane, a secure online platform for health practitioners. Clients simply click on the appointment link provided by their counsellor in order for the session to begin. There is no need to download any software.

Does Online Counselling work?

In short, yes. Research shows that counselling using video platforms showed significant reductions in symptoms for clients presenting with a range of concerns including anxiety, depression and substance use disorders. These clients included older adults and people of colour. The symptom improvements were comparable to those experienced by clients receiving in-person counselling.

A key element of effective therapy is the connection and working relationship between the counsellor and the client. Research shows that being online does not negatively impact this alliance and may in some instances enhance it.

What are the advantages of Online Counselling?

  • You can’t beat the convenience. You can meet with a counsellor from the comfort and convenience of your home.

  • It saves time and money as it cuts out a commute.

  • It gives people in small communities in British Columbia, who may have fewer counselling services available, access to more options.

Is Online Counselling Confidential and Secure?

Yes, if the platform being used is encrypted and adheres to laws designed to protect client privacy and confidentiality.

At Spring Counselling, we use Jane software for online counselling. Read more here about Jane’s security protocols.

We hope that this has answered some questions you may have had about online counselling. If you feel ready to give it a try, please contact us to set up a free 15-minute phone consultation.
